To make it into the competitive world of fashion, you need to impress the recruiter/employer. That increases the importance of a resume in acquiring your dream job. But it is difficult to showcase your skills in a resume. However, you can easily do that with the right resume format. So, let’s jump in and understand how to make a compelling fashion resume format:

Formatting the header

The header sets the foundation of your resume as it is written at the top. So optimizing the header is important in formatting your fashion resume.

The header for your resume needs to be divided into 4 categories:

  • Name: Just write your name once in the header and make sure that you do not repeat it.
  • Contact Information: Add your contact information such as email address, phone number, location, etc.
  • Links: Add all relevant links that are valuable for your profile. For example, portfolio, Instagram profile, LinkedIn, fashion blog, etc.
  • Title: Optimize your resume title as per your current or last held job title. For instance, Fashion Designer, Runway Model, Exhibition Artist, etc.

Correctly write the summary

The summary of your resume should be written right below the header as it showcases your key achievements.

The idea of a resume summary is highlighting the key skills as it is the first thing that a recruiter notices. Hence, you need to make sure that your summary does the best job in conveying your expertise.

Here are a few best practices that will help you correctly craft a summary for your fashion resume:

  • Begin the summary by writing your job title followed by pointers showcasing your skills.
  • Make sure your summary is written in a paragraph format and not in bullet points.
  • Avoid including instances of first and second-person pronouns to begin sentences.

Check the example below of a well-curated summary:

“3+ years experienced Fashion Designer with expertise in crafting designs as per the client requests. Adept at following trends and liaising with major clothing companies to establish a brand identity. Proficient in collaborating with models, dances, influences, etc. to improve brand awareness and market sales.”

Add your skills

Recruiter takes 6 seconds to go through a resume. So to prove that you are a worthy candidate, you need to curate the skills section in a way that readily displays your expertise and proficiencies.

A lot of candidates make the mistake of writing sentences in this section. For instance, “hands-on experience in fashion designing”, or “experience in brand presence”.

So in this section, all you need to do is simply write the skills.

Optimizing the professional experience section

The fourth section of your resume needs to be the professional experience section. This section contains your job responsibilities and professional accomplishments, so you need to make sure that you format it correctly.

There are four essentials that you should keep in mind when you are writing this section:

  • Bullet points: Long paragraphs are a big no when you write your job responsibilities. Instead, we advise you to make one-liner bullet points.
  • Power verbs: Do not include any instances of first and second-person pronouns. And try to use power/action verbs, it will help you create a better impression of your expertise.
  • Full stops: Statements in the professional experience section aren’t complete sentences so avoid adding full-stops.
  • Highlighting: In each statement, highlight important details and words as a way of directing the recruiter towards these pointers. This also helps improve the readability of your resume.
  • Subheadings: For 3-4 statements, include relevant subheadings that showcase your functional skills. For example, for a fashion resume, it can be “Brand Association & Runaway Modeling”.

Modifying it for ATS

The applicant tracking system is a software that screens a resume as per a set of keywords, sections, file type, etc.

It helps filter out resumes that are ill-constructed and shortlist applications that can be of value to the recruiter.

Hence, it is extremely important to keep the format of your resume intact to beat the ATS.

Check the tips outlined below:

  • Reverse chronological: List your work profiles, education details, certifications, etc. in reverse chronological order. This will help you focus on the recent achievements over the older pointers.
  • Correct file type: Submit your resume in a PDF format. But make sure you check the job description to see what is required file type. For example, a lot of the older versions of ATS cannot parse a PDF file.
  • Choose a resume template: Choose an ATS optimized resume template and follow the format outlined in the template.
