It has been a troubling time for all the past few months, most of us can hardly believe we cheered 2020 in as the clock struck twelve - if only we knew. Despite the hardships, it’s always pleasant to see people coming together to raise each other up. The British Fashion Council were able to gather an initial £1,000,000 for British designers, but now the organization have been able to provide yet another £500,000 to keep the industry afloat!

This is very important news for all the designers, small and large, as this will keep the fashion cogs churning and the industry well oiled to provide us with the inspiring looks we so desire. Donations from brands such as Alexander McQueen, Browns and JohnLewis & Partners have generously donated.

Masks for good!

The profits from the Great British Designers Face Coverings project also helped reach the goal - this was a campaign with Bags of Ethics to create reusable, non-medical face coverings. Six designers in London banded together to raise funds that were also donated to NHS and Wings of Hope Children’s charity.

Save our designers

In May 2020, with the initial £1,000,000, financial support was offered to 37 British designers/businesses along with mentoring. This depended on urgency and ability to cope, making sure it was a fair distribution. Recipients were among the likes of Richard Quinn, Roksanda and Phoebe English - all essential to the creativity of the British design scene. There was even a portion for students as they are ‘underpinning the future generation of creative talent’.

Caroline Rush, Chief Executive BFC stated ‘“We have seen an astonishing amount of applications come through from British designer businesses all over the country, asking for help to survive the crisis. The need for support is immense. Our hope is to re-open the fund for future rounds, to help as many businesses as possible, and ensure the future growth and success of the British fashion industry.”

This hints at a need for us to come together to survive the crisis, but the hope is there and fashion will emerge stronger than before.
