John Boyega is a British actor and producer who shot to fame for his performance as Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Theatre has always been a large part of his life, having performed in numerous school productions before being spotted by a talent director for the Theatre Peckham. Hailed as one of the UKs’ Stars of Tomorrow in 2011; John is a shining star in the UK film scene.
However; as a person of colour, John holds an important position in society; and he is using his powers for good. Voted in the Top 100 people in the UK of African/African-Caribbean descent, John has been a very vocal supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement and the demand for equality and justice against the persecution and suppression of people of colour.
Followers of the Homme Boy Style segments will know that I’ve already covered black tie events when I looked at Dave. So, for this one, I’m making the assumption that you will already have a few suits in ‘safe’ colours and will show you the best of the rest and how to stand out from the crowd.
Since these suits should only come out on the rare occasion, I’d recommend looking towards high street brands for these statement pieces. Brands such as Topman, River Island, ASOS and Moss Bros all sell decent options, but my opinion would see you look to Suit Supply and the burgundy number below. Burgundy is a great colour as it stands out but still looks classy, and the double-breasted blazer is also still quite unconventional and usually only seen on special occasions. Pair with a turtleneck jumper and plain pair of black shoes to keep the outfit clean and focused on the suit colour.
That first outing from quarantine
Quarantine lock-down restrictions have started to be lifted across the country, except for a few places. With this in mind, as more people start to go out and return back to a new normal, use this chance to dress up on your first outing. Whether it’s just collecting a takeaway, or popping into the shops for the first time, make a statement the moment you leave the door for the ‘gram.
For this, look into your wardrobe and look to see if you have any statement pieces. This can anything from a pair of coloured trousers to a trench coat; just find something you own that you don’t wear often or something you recently bought that is a little bit outside your usual comfort zone. Fashion should be all about looking good and feeling confident in yourself, and what better way than to step out wearing something new and bold.
For the readers that want to know, below is latest pick up. The tech-wear trend has grown in the last few years and I’ve been after one fora while after seeing one by Alyx years ago, and finally I found one that I think is similar to it whilst also having a bit of independent character about it.
Colour when used properly can create a powerful statement. This can either come down to individual items, such as the jumper worn by John above, or by a perfectly colour-coordinated outfit.
An entire outfit featuring colour is very difficult to pull off, but if you are wanting to venture into this, then a single coloured item paired with neutral or plainer tones is a great way to incorporate colour into your wardrobe without looking like a rainbow.
I love this Rick Owens shirt, and style it with a pair of black shorts (the UK summer is just kicking off it seems) and a pair of discrete black trainers for a summer statement.
