Makeup Artist, Beauty icon, entrepreneur and founder of Huda Beauty, Huda Kattan, has pledged to donate $100,000 to support freelance makeup artists who are struggling during the COVID-19 crisis. This is excellent news for most of our friends in the creative industry. If you had these panic calls from your MUA friend here is what you need to know.
Huda Beauty Pledges $100.000
In a raw and emotional Instagram video, she explained: “When coronavirus first hit, I think everyone was scared about like ‘how can I protect my loved ones?’ And then it became ‘oh my god, how am I going to protect myself?’ And now, it’s like, how are we going to protect the entire world from the financial impact of what’s about to happen?
We feel you Huda, and happy you see it like so many in the industry who wished they chose another career. What is the beauty industry going to support each other.
“If we get sick or not, everyone is going to be affected financially, and some people are not going to be able to survive that financial impact. And that’s, for me, the scariest thing right now. Like, it’s so scary to think about the people who are gonna get sick but the people who are gonna become homeless, people who are going to lose their jobs, the people who are not gonna be able to feed their children, to pay for the roofs over their head. That, to me, has become now the scariest situation.”
When she started her business, back in 2016, Kattan couldn’t afford to pay her employees or her rent. “We were just like ‘oh my God if we can just survive this year we’ll make it through.’ It is hard to run a business as it is, never-minds adding a pandemic to a situation,” she said.
As a former freelance makeup artist herself, Kattan wanted to do something concrete to help the community. “It feels like yesterday for me, so I don’t know, I feel it. I feel it in my stomach, I feel it in so many places, and I’m scared for people. I guess that fear that I had in those days of not knowing how we were gonna make it, I feel it so much right now.”
To start, Kattan and her team will donate $100,000 to 100 freelance makeup artists. She took it to Instagram and asked her followers to tag a freelance MUA who is struggling and share why they’ve put them forward. The beauty guru has also explained they will continue to do everything they can to support freelancers and small businesses during these challenging times.
