This London Fashion week, we were invited to the intimate preview of the Maison Bent SS21 fashion collection called 'Annette'. After looking at the short film and capsule collection, I wished we could order directly. The Spring Summer 2021 collection soul-searching investigation the explored heritage and tradition. And this Caribbean girl can feel it and see it in clothes.

Mademoiselle Bent celebrates individuality, self-confidence and the power of femininity through culture and gentle beauty. I love gloves, and the designer has made gloves to match the gowns and face masks. In the times we live in gloves are an essential accessory, and I LOVE IT!
" This capsule collection was created during the UK lockdown period with limited access to suppliers and resources with the small team all working virtually throughout most of the process. Whilst being at home for 4 months. I was able to spend a lot of time outside with my Grandparents. And actually, speak with them and hear all their stories. "

What I really appreciated about the collection was that it also reminded me of my grandmother and her clothes too., and how I used to rade her closets for the Caribbean made vintage dresses that I still wear. She brought her dresses when she was young to the new world with her.
The designer was also influenced by her grandmother, with her own experience finding her way in the new world when she also emigrated to the UK. The capsule collection enthuses the interconnection between feminine Jamaican nostalgia inspired by a photograph of the designer's grandma's transition from Jamaica to the United Kingdom years ago.
This touch of Jamaican spices is shown in the traditional cotton poplin and versatile drawstring alongside constructed ' peep-holes' reminiscing and inmost sense of poignancy. The colour palette is feminine yet hold to symbolise "rays of hope" and to bring forth the celebratory atmosphere of the Caribbean. And since Carnival was cancelled this year, Maison Bent made us look forward to next year want to wear one of the Haute Couture like gowns but adding only an umbrella may be to match the gloves.
For her second showing during London, Fashion Week Madmoiselle Bent definitely upped her game. During a challenging year for most emerging designers, she levelled up and came hard with a sellable collection. It just makes us hope we have somewhere to go next year in one of her unique gowns.
