Ever since I was a teenager, I suffered from Migraines. At times I could not even see. When the sun used to beam in the classroom windows were some of my worst days. And being allergic to Ibuprofen usually just made me live with pain and had to lay down until the headaches went away.
"They were one of those people who thought a migraine is just a headache," I would quickly assume. They clearly had no idea on just how debilitating migraine can be – the sensitivity to every light and sound, nausea and vomiting, and the pain.
Holistic to Botox Beauty Relief
That's when my eyes were opened to a world of holistic care and natural remedies and botox. All the ones that I had been dismissing. To my surprise, food, yoga, and essential oils ultimately became my best strategies for reducing both the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks.
Yet, botox went a step further. Once Lockdown was lifted, I booked an appointment with Dr Lauren Hamilton after our Instagram chat about botox and curing migraines. She treated me for migraines and forehead wrinkles, more about that later and how essential oils are aftercare. Which oddly enough are also natural remedies for mature skin. I believe we are on to something.
Migraine Remedies Journey
The botox shots kept me migraine free for 3 months. With all the stress of life this year, I now had no headaches, which I was grateful for. For my follow up aftercare treatment and self-care, I had daily doses of essential oils in the defuser, or I made a homemade body cream.
My Migraine Symptoms
My attacks wear accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photophobia and phonophobia. Which made it impossible for me to look at a screen or whiteboard for too long. Today because of 2020, my migraines had come back and working on a laptop for the majority of my work duties invites migraines. Stress and staring at a screen for long hours do not help the symptoms.
This urged me to find natural and medical advice on how to cure migraines. My first step was to drink a glass of water at least every hour of the day. Often I would drop some essentials oils in the water to cure a migraine naturally. Or put a few drops in a defuser for some aromatherapy. It always did the job and made me feel good, and my surroundings smelt biblical too.
HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS
If you do not know much about the healing properties of essential oils, we give you some quick tips on, therapeutic-grade oils. Essential oils can be used in one of three ways: aromatically, topically or internally. The following is an easy guide.
- Aromatically: Just smelling the aroma of oil can create a response in the brain that will elicit emotions and internal benefits. Some will develop an invigorating or uplifting effect. Others will create calming or soothing feelings. This empowers you to be able to choose the oil for your desired health outcome.
- Topically: Essential oils easily penetrate the skin and offer benefits not only to the area applied, but once they're absorbed into the bloodstream, they can have therapeutic benefits to your body overall. I recommend rubbing it on your feet.
- Internally: Some essential oils can be taken internally via veggie capsules, a drop under the tongue or on the roof of the mouth, or even in beverages and in cooking.
Essential oils are highly concentrated liquids made from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots or other elements of a plant. Essential oils can even help treat specific conditions like headaches or migraine. Different oils offer different benefits. They also provide services without the long lists of side effects that can accompany prescription headache and migraine medications.
THE BEST ESSENTIAL OILS TO MANAGE MIGRAINE
When it comes to relieving migraines and headaches with doTERRA essential oils, you have several options – in terms of both which oils to use and how to apply them. Followed by the best single essential oils and blends for migraines, tension, headaches, and mild head pain. Some people react to one particular oil differently from another person. Therefore, it's good to have several options to see what works best for you. So here are the best doTERRA single essential oils and blends for migraines, tension headaches, and mild head pain.
Peppermint is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Its lasting, cooling effect on skin can help prevent muscle contractions and invigorate blood flow in the forehead. And there's research to back it up.
According to one study, 40 patients experiencing a total of 164 headache attacks applied peppermint topically 15 and 30 minutes before a headache. Participants found significant pain relief and concluded that peppermint essential oil is a well-tolerated and cost-efficient alternative to traditional pain solutions.
Acting as a natural expectorant, eucalyptus oil helps cleanse harmful toxins and microorganisms from the body. This oil is particularly effective at fighting headaches that stem from congestion and cold symptoms
A study released in Evidence-based Alternative and Complementary Health Magazine revealed that inhaling eucalyptus curbed pain and reduced blood pressure. The pain-reducing effects and sedative benefits proved especially fruitful for those dealing with tension headaches.
As many doTERRA users refer to it as the "gateway oil," lavender has a lengthy roster of healthful benefits (calming agent, mood booster, skin enhancer, the list goes on). It is mostly known for its impact on neurological issues. Thanks to its main constituents, linalyl acetate and linalool, lavender can profoundly impact the nervous system and help manage head pain – from mild to more severe.
A study by the Journal of Herbal Medicine found that the use of lavender therapy on migraine sufferers – conducted over 3 months – reduced the frequency and severity of head pain.
Deep Blue is a cooling and soothing doTERRA blend that is, according to the company, "perfect for a massage after a long day or an intense workout." Minty oils like peppermint and wintergreen combined with soothing oils like ylang-ylang and chamomile make it a great headache-reliever.
The blend contains the following oils: Camphor, peppermint, wintergreen, ylang-ylang, blue tansy, helichrysum, chamomile, and osmanthus.
Feeling stressed? It just so happens that Frankincense essential oil has a solution for that. The chemical components of Frankincense result in a potent aroma that can help to dispel negative feelings—like stress. If you are feeling like the pressures of life are weighing down your mood, apply Frankincense to the bottom of your feet. The soothing sensation and aroma will promote feelings of relaxation and a balanced perspective. The monoterpenes also contribute to the aromatic benefits of Frankincense essential oil, including its ability to promote peace and a sense of focus. Applying Oils for Headaches
Now that you know the best oils for head pain, it's time to put them into action. So what is the best way to find relief? It depends on your current environment and what kind of benefits you are looking to achieve. Here are a few options:
Massaging your chosen oils into your skin is an easy way to find relatively quick relief. Dilute a couple drops with a carrier oil (i.e. Fractionated Coconut Oil) and massage into your temples and back of the neck. If you're trying to get rid of a tension headache, an ideal solution would be to have your partner give you a full body massage.
Essential oil baths work great for promoting relaxation and reducing various pains. It's also an excellent solution if your headache stems from stress-related factors. Add 4 to 6 drops of your chosen oil(s) to a warm bath and soak for 15 to 20 minutes.
Running oils through a diffuser is one of the most common ways to use aromatherapy. It's also one that provides long, sustainable results. By just adding a few drops of oil to your diffuser, you can gain benefits for hours at a time.
If you are working or you're on the go, taking a bath or toting around a traditional diffuser isn't going to be an option. That's why more and more people are using portable essential oil diffuser products like:
- Roller bottles
- USB diffusers
- Diffuser bracelets
- Diffuser necklaces
We recommend the Floatie Humidifier USB diffuser to Find Those Mindful Moments. The Hourglass is perfect for helping you reduce tension and stress in just one minute. Botox for Migraines
Why did I turn to botox? At some points this summer I could not get out of bed. Dr Lauren Hamilton had recommended botox for those days. Because unless you suffer from severe migraines, you do not understand. And when you get then around your cycle, it is best to stay away from everyone. So here are some facts about the history of botox for migraines.
'The analgesic effects of BoNT were observed 30 years ago in patients with Torticollis spasmodicus[Tsui et al. 1986]. This observation was attributed to the myorelaxant effects of BoNT. The first evidence for an effect of BoNT on Migraine was found in patients who were treated with BoNT for hyperfunctional lines of the face.' (AKA wrinkles!) If you saw my forehead before you knew I suffered from migraines.
So that is where those lines came from. I was hooked on the thought of relief and getting rid of those forehead wrinkles that aged my young-looking skin. In 2010 the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) for prophylactic treatment of Chronic Migraine.
Introduction to What Migraines Are
Migraine is a common neurological disorder featuring recurrent attacks of headache. Typical migraine attacks last for 4–72 h and involve head-aches of the following characteristics: pulsating quality, unilateral location, moderate or severe intensity and aggravation by routine physical. Thanks to Dr Lauren Hamilton and her Victor & Garth aesthetics clinic, my headaches are gone. With a little botox and essential oils, I am cured with little hassle, and my skin is glowing. I also learned that women of colour are more and more seeking advice on these treatments and love a few essential self-care moments.
Dr Lauren Hamilton works closely with The Safe Space - a wellness hub focusing on mental maintenance – that also provides counselling services for clients struggling with self-image disorders. She has also recently partnered with a well-known sexual wellness brand, so look out for that announcement soon. We are waiting for it too and more reason to feel good about our selves.
